Commonly referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can change the shape and/or size of your nose. Nose reshaping can be done for cosmetic reasons if you’re unhappy with the way your nose looks, or for medical reasons to help with breathing or structural problems. In either situation, rhinoplasty can help to reduce and/or reshape the bridge, nostrils, or tip of the nose, better define the nose, reshape and straighten the nose, and/or change the angle of the nose.
Why Consider a Nose Job
In the case of a deviated septum or other medical problems, a nose job can help relieve breathing problems and correct structural issues such as those from an accident, injury, or cancer. What to Expect with a Nose Job
First, you’ll be given general anesthesia. Then, depending on which type of nose surgery you’re undergoing, the surgeon will make incisions inside or outside the nose. The surgeon may remove bone or cartilage or add tissue to reshape the nose. Immediately after the procedure, you’ll have a splint and/or packing inside your nose to help it heal in the correct position. While it’s initially healing, you’ll need to rest and avoid strenuous activity for several weeks.
Types of Rhinoplasty
Closed Rhinoplasty
A closed rhinoplasty is a procedure in which an incision is made on the inside of the nose. This limits access, which limits what can be done. The benefits of a closed rhinoplasty are that it is less invasive, bruising and swelling are minimized, scars are completely hidden, and recovery time is shorter.
Open Rhinoplasty
An open rhinoplasty is a procedure in which incisions are made on the inside of the nose (as in a closed rhinoplasty), and on the columella, the small area between the nostrils. Because an open rhinoplasty procedure offers greater access to the nose, it is better suited to more precise or complicated cases. Open rhinoplasty is also more invasive than closed rhinoplasty, so comparatively bruising and swelling are greater and the recovery period is a bit longer.
Rhinoplasty Recovery
The packing inside your nose can typically be removed after a week. Initial swelling and bruising from a nose job resolves within 1-2 weeks, and that is when most patients can resume work or other low-key activities. More strenuous activities should be avoided until you’re given the all-clear from your surgeon. Full nose job recovery can take up to a year and it’s common within that timeframe for swelling to come and go, especially in the morning.
Ideal Candidate for a Nose Job
Good candidates for a nose job are people who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the procedure. The ideal candidate is a non-smoker who is over the age of 18, as the nose is still developing in younger patients. What are the risks associated with rhinoplasty?
While rare, there are risks associated with a nose job as there are with any surgery. They include: Reaction to anesthesia; Numbness or pain in the areas of skin impacted by the surgery; Difficulty breathing; Infection; Nasal septal perforation, which is a hole in the nasal septum and requires corrective surgery; Poor healing; Skin discoloration, swelling and scarring. How long does a nose job last?

You’ll start to see your new nose as the initial bruising and swelling goes down within 1-2 weeks, but it’ll take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully refine.
